Bren School students take part in an intellectually challenging education designed to prepare them for leadership roles within a variety of careers in environmental problem solving.  Students obtain broad and balanced training in natural and social sciences as well as management.  Additionally, Bren students participate in programs that emphasize both quantitative and analytical approaches to assessing and solving environmentally-based problems.  

Bren School students graduate with a comprehensive knowledge of the principles of environmental science and management and are prepared to account for the full range of physical, biological, social, political, and economic realities of environmental decision-making.

Academic Programs  

The Bren School offers a two-year professional Master of Environmental Science and Management (MESM) program and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Management program consisting of directed research with a Bren faculty member and culminating in a doctoral dissertation. Also available is a Ph.D. training program in Economics and Environmental Science (EES). The NSF-funded program is offered jointly by the Bren School and the UCSB Economics Department.
