THE BREN SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT Presents
Bruce Kendall
11:30 am - 12:30 pm Bren Hall 1424 "Advancing the Science of Marine Protected Area Planning: Promoting Flexible Decisions and Ensuring Conservation Goals Are Met" Part of the Bren faculty-to-faculty lecture series Hosted by Bren Assistant Professor Christina Tague
Abstract Marine protected area (MPA) networks have become popular marine biodiversity conservation tools. MPA networks should be designed to achieve conservation goals at minimal socioeconomic cost. During my sabbatical in 2008-09, I plan to address two outstanding challenges in MPA design: 1) many potential networks have similar value and cost, and we must effectively communicate this to policymakers and stakeholders to promote flexible negotiation; 2) in trying to avoid locations of high fishery value, we may create reserves with low-quality habitat. In this talk, I will lay out the background for these problems and present my preliminary ideas for approaching them. __________________________________________________________________________________
