THE BREN SCHOOL OF Environmental Science & Management Presents
Matthew Kotchen Thursday, May 22, 2008 "Yes, Environmental Regulation Can Increase Profits: Part of the Bren faculty-to-faculty lecture series Hosted by Bren Assistant Professor Christina Tague
Abstract Economic theory suggests that dollar bills are not lying around on the sidewalk, meaning that we cannot get something for nothing. This reasoning suggests that environmental regulation must always come at a cost; that is, environmental mandates must decrease producer profits. This faculty-to-faculty presentation will explore new theory that identifies conditions under which this standard intuition does not hold. While providing a basic introduction to game theory, the fundamental insights will be discussed in the context of the emergence of green clubs and the management of common-pool resources. __________________________________________________________________________________
