THE BREN SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT Presents
Laurens Bouwer Institute for Environmental Studies, Vrije Universiteit Wednesday, May 28, 2008 "Climate Change and Flood Risks: Historical Analysis and Projections" Hosted by Bren Professor Tom Dunne
Abstract Climate change is expected to lead to more frequent disasters, in particular river floods. The exact links between climate change and flood risk, and the role of other factors, are still uncertain. Historical analysis has shown that socioeconomic development is a major driver of flood risk. Research must therefore combine hydrology and scenarios of land-use and economic change. A historical analysis of disaster losses will be presented, as well as a case study of current and future potential flood risks in The Netherlands. Biography The work of Laurens Bouwer covers many aspects of global change, but in particular the relationship between climate change and water resources management. He has been working on the hydrological impacts of climate variability and climate change on river basins. He was a lead author for a chapter on the insurance sector in the Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and he was an expert reviewer for the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report. He has published a number of papers on hydrological change and insurance and risk management in the water sector. Recently, Laurens started working on a PhD that deals with the impacts of climate change on flood losses. __________________________________________________________________________________
