"Community-based fisheries research at the Santa Barbara Channel Islands"

Hunter Lenihan, Faculty Advisor

Abstract
This research seminar will describe an innovative collaboration led by Matt Kay working with Santa Barbara area lobster fishermen. This collaborative research program joined the tools and talents of fishermen and scientists to enhance a process of inquiry centered on three fundamental research objectives: (1) Assess impacts of marine reserves on California spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus) populations inside reserve borders; (2) detect interactions of lobster populations inside reserves with the fishery outside reserve borders, and; (3) use reserves to develop a spatially explicit harvest rate assessment for spiny lobster at the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. The results of this research have broad importance for marine conservation and management of an economically and ecologically important species.
