"Nanoparticle Behavior in Environmental and Test Media:
conclusions from static and dynamic stability testing"

Hosted by Patricia Holden

Abstract
The appearance and behavior of nanoparticles in the environment and in test media are governed by
a multitude of parameters. It would be helpful to be able to predict these processes from first principles, but
currently governing principles are still too little understood to make meaningful predictions even in
fairly simple systems. We have addressed this issue by developing a testing approach to generate
empiric data for the dispersion stability of nanoparticles in a wide variety of conditions appearing in the natural environment or in test media.
The testing procedure itself and the comparison of conditions and materials will be presented and discussed with respect to the needs in current exposure and toxicity testing.

Biography
Frank von der Kammer is a lecturer in environmental pollution and site remediation and, since 2005, has led the NanoGeosciences Division and the Nanoparticle Analysis Laboratory in the Department for Environmental Geosciences at the University of Vienna. His research focus is the investigation of nanoparticles and nano-scale processes in the environment, including the behavior and characterization of natural and engineered nanoparticles, metal speciation across natural nanoparticles and the role for trace element bioavailability. He earned his Phd in Environmental Nanoparticle Analysis at the University of Technology, in Hamburg, and his master's in chemistry and ecology at the University of Lueneburg.

NOTE: Research colloquia are hosted by Bren faculty members and are generally high-level talks about research in a particular area of environmental science and management.
