Biography
Michael Hanrahan is CEO and co-founder of The Ocean Channel (www.ocean.com), a Santa Barbara—based media company focused on the production and distribution of ocean content for Internet audiences. Michael is currently working on several media projects for Ocean Channel, including developing a web-based video encyclopedia of marine creatures for NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program and UC Santa Barbara's Marine Science Institute. Hanrahan recently finished a film for The Nature Conservancy about its restoration work on Santa Cruz Island, one of the northern Channel Islands. Beyond The Ocean Channel, Hanrahan has been working closely with acclaimed natural history filmmaker Mike deGruy on his epic two-hour Discovery Channel documentary about the giant squid. In 2007, Michael led the inaugural summer for Blue Horizons, a unique educational experience at UCSB that combines classes in marine and coastal issues of the global ocean with a nine-week "boot camp" on digital video production. Since 2004, Michael has been a board member of Santa Barbara's Environmental Defense Center (EDC). In 2003, he organized and produced the annual Santa Barbara Ocean Film Festival, which presents ocean films from around the world.
