THE BREN SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT Presents
Kevin Knobloch Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008 "Scientific Integrity and Environmental Problem Solving"
Hosted by Bren School Dean Ernst von Weizsäcker
Summary In 2004, the Union of Concerned Scientists launched a major initiative to harness the scientific community’s widespread concern about pervasive political interference in science by the Bush administration. The impact of these actions has been felt across a broad array of issues including climate change, mercury poisoning, reproductive health, and prescription drugs. The result has been policies that are at odds with the best available science and have resulted in serious consequences for public health, safety, and the environment while tarnishing the reputations of federal science agencies. UCS President Kevin Knobloch will provide a look at the current state of science in federal agencies and discuss the important role of science in public policy and how advocacy and activism can change the tide of this troubling trend. The Union of Concerned Scientists is the leading science-based nonprofit organization working for a healthy environment and a safer world. UCS combines independent scientific research and citizen action to develop innovative, practical solutions and secure responsible changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices.
Biography Kevin Knobloch has been President of the Union of Concerned Scientiests since January 2004, after rejoining UCS as Executive Director in January 2000. He also held the position of Legislative Director for U.S. Senator Tim Wirth for four years. Kevin began his career as a journalist. He has an M.P.A from the JFK School at Harvard University, with a focus on natural resources economics. __________________________________________________________________________________
