The Bren School Advisory Board

The Bren School Advisory Board held its first meeting in Santa Barbara in February 1999. The board was selected to represent the varying segments of society that the Bren School attempts to bring together in order to address the complex concerns of the earth’s environment. The purpose of the board is to advise the school on its curriculum, policies, and practices. 


The Board Student Member

The Advisory Board Student Member is a full voting member of the Bren School Advisory Board, serving a one-year term lasting until the end of the school year in June. The student attends all meetings, including the annual board meeting, which will be held in two sessions — Feb. 9, 2011 from 12:00–6:00 pm, followed by dinner, and Feb. 10, 2011 from 9:00-12:00, followed by lunch. Meetings and meals will be held at the Bren School.

Student Board Member Qualifications

A candidate for the position of Advisory Board Student Member must be (1) currently enrolled as a first-year master’s or PhD student in the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management and (2) in good standing.  The student must be able to commit to attending the February 2011 board meetings and must effectively communicate relevant information to other students and board members throughout the year.

Application Process

To be considered for selection, interested students must electronically submit the application to the Academic personnel coordinator/assistant to the dean, Doris Bleecher (, no later than 4:00 p.m. on Monday, November 1, 2010. The applications will be reviewed, and the top applicants will be interviewed by Dean Steve Gaines, who will make a decision before November 19, 2010. Advisory Board president Dynes will formally appoint the Advisory Board Student Member who is nominated by the dean.
