Selection
To create a GIS model of potential species habitat
distribution, a set of species must first be selected.
The habitat requirements of the species must be
converted to the model input parameters. Data on the
observed distribution of species can serve as controls
against which the model outputs can be tested.
Although not meant to be an exhaustive list of
existing species in the region, the individual species
in the project's Species List were chosen because they
represent the range of plant, invertebrate, and
vertebrate marine species in the Santa Barbara Channel.
Additionally, those in the Species List were selected
based upon a set of criteria that
