Q: Where can I find an online tutorial for using EndNote?

A: An excellent online tutorial has been put together by Sue Foggin, Philson Library, School of Medicine, University of Auckland.

Q: How can I access Endnote?

A: EndNote can only be accessed on group project machines. If you wish to purchase EndNote the bookstore carries a student version which can be purchased at a reduced price.

Q: How do I create a new reference?

A: Create a new reference by following the proceeding steps:

Create a new reference library by going to File --> New. A reference library dialogue box will open. Enter the name of the new library and browse to the folder where it will be stored.

To add references to the library, go to References --> New.

Choose the Reference Type, then fill in the information for the reference.

Close the window when you are done editing this information. The new reference will appear in the reference library window.

Q: How do I print out a list of references?

A: You can print out your whole bibliography, or just the results of a search:

Go to File --> Output Styles --> Open Style Manager. A dialogue box will appear.

Put a check by the journal style you want to use. Close the box.
You can now print your bibliography by going to File –-> Print.

Q: How do I insert a reference into my paper?

A: Make sure you are at the point in the paper where you want the reference to go. Open up the Endnote library containing the appropriate reference and click on that reference. Then go back to Word and go to Tools -> Insert Citation(s).

Q: How do I choose the journal style for my references and bibliography?

A: Open Endnote and go to File --> Output Styles --> Open File Manager

Q: How do I finish the document, so that the references in the body appear as they should when I print it?

A: From within the Word document go to Tools --> Format Bibliography. If you get a popup box, be sure to check that the correct format will be applied, and click on Format. This will format the references in the body of the paper, as well as the bibliography, according the style that you chose. If you want to edit the document some more, or change styles, go to Word, and in the Tools menu choose Unformat Citation(s).
