What is the Remote Desktop Connection Software and why do I want it?

The Remote Desktop Connection Software is used to connect to Bren's Windows 2003 Terminal Servers, Snoopy and Woodstock. This full client software is installed on your computer and provides a nicer interface than connecting using the web interface.

How do I get it and install it?

Note: if you're running Windows 2000 or XP, you should already have remote desktop connection installed

1. Download the Remote Desktop Connection Software from the link below.

2. http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/tools/1.0/wxp/en-us/msrdpcli.exe

3. Double-click the msrdpcli.exe executable to install. Accept the defaults and click Finish.

How do I use it once it is installed?

1. Go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop Connection

2. For the computer name, enter snoopy.bren.ucsb.edu or woodstock.bren.ucsb.edu and click on "Connect."

3. Enter your Bren username and password.

4. You are now logged into a terminal server computer at Bren, where you can access your H: drive home directory.

How do I transfer files to and from snoopy after I install Remote Desktop Connection?

1. Open Remote Desktop Connection

2. Click on the Options button.

3. Under the "General" tab, make sure "snoopy.bren.ucsb.edu" (without the quotes) is in "computer"

4. Click on the "Local Resources" tab

5. Under "Local Devices" check "disk drives".

6. Click "Connect." You may get a security warning. Click ok on that security warning.

7. Log into the ESM domain as usual.

8. To transfer files, double click on "My Computer" in the snoopy virtual window. You should see your disk drives under "Other." This is how you transfer files to and from snoopy.

Note: You may wish to save this connection setting so you dont have to do this in the future.

I have a Mac running OSX. None of these directions help!
