Windows FAQ on Directory Permissions

Directory Permissions for all are now as follows:

Home directory
Administrators (removed)
Domain Admin (Full)
User (Full)
Domain user (List)

All subdirectories and files (including files in the home directory)
Administrators (removed)
Domain Admin (Full)
User (Full)

Why do I need to know this?
What do these permissions mean?
Can I change any of the permissions?

1) Why do I Need to Know This?

All changes were done recursively, meaning that all files and subdirectories now have the permissions structures listed above. If you set different permissions on directories you will most likely have to change the permissions again.

2) What Do These Permissions Mean?

The permissions as indicated above mean that Administrator and the "owner" have Full Access to the home directory and all subdirectories, and that Domain Users (all valid Bren users) have List Access for the home directory. Make sure that you grant full access to the Domain Admins Group for any subdirectories that you create. If you do not do this, our backup procedures will fail when they come online.

List access means that others can see the names of files and folders in your home directory, but they cannot open them. The idea behind granting this type of access is to provide for information sharing between valid Bren users. In order to take advantage of this provision, you will need to follow the procedures outlined below in "Can I Change Any of the Permissions?"

3) Can I Change Any of the Permissions?

Change the permissions on any directories that you want others to access. In general, it is recommended that you create a directory called pub or public within your home directory with "Read & Execute" permissions for the group "Domain Users" or add a group such as "grad2003."

Also note that this means that you can create a directory and give only a few users access to the directory such as yourself and the other people working on a particular project. To do this, create a directory for the project, and follow the instructions given in:

Start => Help => "Index".

Then type: "folder permissions, setting" and select: "Set, view, change or remove file and folder permissions"

For more information on what the permissions mean, please use online help:

Start => Help

Select the "Index" tab and type the following without quotes: "folder permissions." In Particular, read the topic "Overview."
